I'm playing around with Foursquare too, Kristin, and I haven't quite figured out the draw yet. It's definitely a strange little app.

I'm not as interested in the actual app, though, as I am the overall notion of location-based features and services. As mobile continues to alter our online and social experiences, location-based services inevitably will play a big role. Imagine "checking in" to your favorite supermarket and immediately receiving an e-mail with coupons for items that are on sale there. Or a real estate app that will immediately give you a list of homes for sale in your area and directions to each property. It's coming.

As for the creeps ... there's a pretty big creep factor in every social tool out there. As you said, the key is filtering out the creeps and following people who provide value to you.

That said, until I figure out Foursquare, I've altered my settings so that my updates are not posted anywhere else. Turns out I really don't want the world knowing where I am every minute, either. :-)

Stay away from Office? Are you mad? :)

Put 2Gb of RAM in your eee and it works fine.

And disable the pagefile because you don't need it and it saves wasting SSD cycles.

Sorry, GT. I stand corrected -- I had thought you could obtain a Hawaii phone number at the time of writing but it appears you cannot. I believe they are planning on allowing these telephone numbers in the future, however.

Thanks for your attention on this!

Sorry, sir you are incorrect - you cannot select an 808 area code with GV. People in Hawaii & Alaska don't get any respect from shipping / telephone / service companies in the continental US.

[...] Treat any information that you store unencrypted on your computer as though it is going to be stolen. You probably wouldn’t care (as much) if someone took your grocery list or vacation photos, but tax returns, bank statements, account passwords, and confidential emails, to name just a few, are another matter altogether. As a rule of thumb, if you can’t stand to have it read by everyone, then make sure it can’t be read by anyone. (For a more thorough treatment of why cryptography is important and to get software recommendations, see “Nothing to hide? Hide it anyway.” [...]

Yes, the shutdown includes all services from BeInSync.

We have investigated several other services and have begun using a service called NomaDesk - which provides similar functionality to BeInSync. You might want to check it out.

Does anybody know if the shut down includes the free service for syncing computers in a home network? I'm guessing so since I can't connect today (Monday, 6/8/2009) and neither can a couple of my friends who tested for me. I don't use the backup or professional services so didn't receive this notification, started searching after no connection today.

Any suggestions of other good syncing software?

Thank you.

Honestly, I write more based upon my own recent experiences or in reply to questions than when looking at trends. I do follow *tons* of sources and am probably steered by trends - but I don't consiously follow them.
If you have any topics you would like to have one of us write about, feel free to make the suggestion.
